June 2016

* 16: the wet weather of the last few weeks does not improve the breeding success of our birds: the rain disturbes the flying out for food, the nests are under water ... the weather gods are not into nature, at least not the nature for these birds.
* 1-10: some members of Tracing Nature went on holiday to Hungary. Next to the National Park Örségi and Balaton Uplands were also visited Kinsunsàg, the location where nightjars feel at home in Hungary. Together with the staff is taken some saliva of one Nightjar catched, in the search for the DNA ratios. Likewise in the immeasurable landscape was a nest of two eggs discovered!

May 2016

* 28: safari in Bosland: by preparation a group of 16 VLD members was taken on path to learn more about the Nightjar and the research. The impassioned audience went home satisfied!  That night was also the 400th Nightjar caught! A modest party was in place.

* 16: it may be a holiday: the search for nightjars goes smootly further. Number 8 and 9 are a fact.
* 12: and if we are prepared: meanwhile the nightjar-car is also a fact. With the ultimate transfers, this vehicle is to spot in Bosland and the wider environment.
* 07: yes, the first nightjars have arrived! Our research can begin. Short nights? We are prepared!
* 06: who has the strangest hobby in Bosland? Radio 2 starts an investigation. Yes, our investigator Ruben is one of the study objects.
* 05: to know who first arrives, automatic recorders hung in the trees of potential environments where nightjars will install for the next few months. A research thanks to the University of Antwerp.
* 04: a long weekend is on its way, curious if our nightjars will start their season here this weekend.... the weather is quite nice!!!! So fingers crossed!!!

July 2014

*10: on a large scale an inventarisation took place in Bosland: a simultane counting between 22:00 pm en 22:30 pm will provide a 'picture of the moment' of what is going on in nightjarworld. Thanks to the many volunteers it was possible to oversee a large region: a new source of data is provided. An impression

June 2014

*30: after the election of May it is time, once again, to vote, but this time no tangle of programs, the choice is simple: deserves the nightjar a place in the Big Five of the province of Limburg? We are convinced that this bird deserves a place in the Top 5! Make Limburg convinced by voting on Het Belang Van Limburg

*26: a first GPS transmitter is placed to know  the holidaydestination of the nightjar, what is their migration route, what are the challenges on the road to the south

*23 -29: sleep was disturbed, not of the bird but of our researchers, because of the impossible hours of the research: new birds are ringed, new nests are discovered, again a recatch of a male that stayed last year at the same location

* 21: a new project is started: the monitoring of sheep. During the months of july, august and september open plains in the forests of Meeuwen-Gruitrode will be visited by a flock of sheep. The shepherd will go every day to a new location to the heather, grasslands, forest trails throughout grazing. How many m² will eat a sheep a day? What vegetation prefers the sheep? Where can one find the flock if one has wants to on bycicling in the nature of Meeuwen-Gruitrode? On these and other questions, we try to find an answer by reading the signals from the transmitter (in a collar to a sheep). More news will follow ...

* 19: members of the city council of Hechtel-Eksel went for a nightjarwalk. They, too, want to know more about the secret life of the bird and the possibilities which Bosland offers. A member of the council did a presentation about Bosland. Afterwards many were impressed about fauna and flora in their own municipality.

* 17: gps-transmitters are placed on females to know their spots where they find their food

*15: it's a good year for the nightjar. Compared to last year we already have a 10 day old chick. In the same period of 2013 there was only the start of a nest

*13: walk with local residents of the Kiefhoek, multiple nightjars were spotted at a rising full moon. Thanks for their interest and contribution. Some pictures

*23: the first signs of life can be heard in an egg

because we don't like to sit still ... in meanwhile
we keep up the inventory of moths, despite the cold weather for this time of year
we visited an area  where sheeps do the mowing. Because sheeps fit the picture in heathland, insects are all around the sheeps and nightjars have insects on their menu... perhaps we can map this habitat ...

*17: third nest found
*13: second nest found
*10: first nest found

This month we follow the weather forecast day by day. The hope for good weather is great. Dry days with mild temperatures are crucial to start the breeding season. But are the weather gods in a good mood?

* 10: Also this evening lends itself to catch nightjars  .... but no catch.
